A notable Boulder architect Roger Easton created this spacious midcentury modern masterpiece for his family in Gunbarrel in 1961. The new owners wanted to maintain its character, interest and architectural integrity amid a much-needed remodel. The ladies of JRG Design knew it could be updated beautifully without compromising the unique structure of the home.
Our vision included maintaining the abundance of natural light, with sliding glass doors and a gorgeous open floor plan. It was important to keep the many details of the home including the original copper fireplace, vaulted ceilings and floor to ceiling windows. We wanted to preserve the integrity and charm of the home, with updates to make it cozy, inviting and energy-efficient.
The owners wanted a modern, yet warm, classic and inviting home that includes many gathering places for friends and family. We maintained the open, airy feeling with large windows throughout the home, taking down several interior walls to open up the dining room/kitchen area and lead straight out to open gardens and the pool area.
The kitchen itself features a large island with inlaid wood, which provides a warm and cozy eating area. It is flanked by an adjoining dining room surrounded by windows made inviting and comfortable with fabrics and texture.
The biggest challenge was choosing the perfect lighting as the vaulted ceiling did not allow installation of can lights or traditional fixtures, so we had to get creative with the lighting. A special bracket was made for the dining room chandelier which had to be functional yet appealing, and we added a very unique lighting installation to wood beam in the living room to create light for the pool table.
We combined a small bedroom with the existing master bedroom to create a true master suite with the feel of an at-home spa with a large modern fireplace and an inviting sitting area.
We styled each bedroom and bathroom to match personalities of the children with fun details and interesting designs, filled with pattern and unique style.
The home features a stunning entryway that opens immediately into a Sunburst chandelier from Urban Lights hanging from the two-story vaulted ceiling over the grand piano. The home features many long open hallways with windows looking out at the pool area, with the interior brick painted white to update add warmth and brighten the space. Beautiful sconces added to the master bedroom suite to create a luxurious feel throughout the space.
This was such a fantastic project to work on, the finished home retains the significant historical importance of the house itself, yet it’s updated and very livable.
Stay tuned for more exciting projects from the our team at JRG Design!
